Walk and talk: How going for walks together can improve your relationship

Strengthen your Body and Your Relationship

Come walk with me lets talk for a while as we travel together along this road called life. Each day we all face new challenges and victories. We have dreams, goals and hopes for the future. By walking together, we can share those important things in life with those we care about in a safe environment.

By walking together and taking the time to share our intimate thoughts with a friend or loved one we are accomplishing two goals. We are strengthening our body while also strengthening our relationship.

In life, there are many distractions. Many times, we are hard pressed to find true quality time to spend with those we love. Walking together is a great way in which to spend quality time with our loved ones without the distractions and stress of everyday life.

I have a few people in my life that I enjoy walking with. Those I am closest to are the ones with which I walk and talk with on a regular basis. They include my wonderful husband, my son, my mother and my best friend.

When walking we find we can discuss those things that are troubling us, we can talk about what is on our mind or we often times talk of plans we are making for the future.

I have found that when my life gets extremely stressful it causes an immense amount of nervous energy. Walking with a friend or loved one is a great way in which to burn the nervous energy, get a good workout while also talking through the issues that are causing stress with someone you trust.

I consider time spent walking with my family and friends very important to me. During our walking talks, we are able to connect on a deeper level, encourage one another, form a closer bond, distress and relax while also getting much needed exercise.

During the last year of my dads life here on earth, there were many times that my husband and I found it impossible to go very far from home. Many times, we found ourselves reaching our stress level limit. We found that by going for a walk together we were able to discuss openly about what we were going through, how it affected us, while also getting a little exercise.

Just the other day I was under an extreme level of stress. My best friend emailed and said; "I think you need a walk! Do you want to go tonight?" Of course, she was right I did need a walk.

I needed a chance to discuss all that was going on in my life while also getting rid of a ton of nervous energy that was building up. I also needed the opportunity to step away from the situation that was causing stress for a moment so that I could look at it more clearly.

We headed out to the country, our favorite place to walk. It is peaceful and we can discuss anything and everything without worrying about being quiet. Before we knew it, we had walked 5 miles. During the last mile of our walk, the phone rang. Good news most of what I was stressing out about had been taken care of.

Many times, we joke that the faster we talk the faster we walk. When we are in deep conversation whether it is fun conversation laughing and joking or a time of trouble shooting together, or even a time of distressing it seems like time flies and we find we feel refreshed, energized and ready to conquer whatever we are facing.

Do something special for yourself, go for a walk with someone you love. You will both reap the benefits of walking and talking together.
