Courting the undead: Assessing the appeal of zombie movies

by (AJ)

I have never quite understood the appeal of zombie movies that come out of Hollywood where Smalltown, USA is put onto the map with the rural area of said town is overrun with zombies! Scaring the townies with their zombie-like ways, wreaking havoc on the innocent people and I assume those that had done them wrong when they were living!

Zombies! I remember the old Scooby-Doo cartoons and I admit I was quite scared as a child in the early '70's by a cartoon Zombie, and then HOLLYWOOD had to come along and bring us Night of the Living Dead! I thought, how in the world can the DEAD be LIVING?

Zombies lurking in the darkness in their masses, decrepit looking faces, lame leg lagging behind, arms half ways on their arms about to fall off, faces that have flesh peeling off the bone, some eyes missing from their sockets! Yet Zombies, those of which still have the good muscle mass left, along with an eyeball to see out of, kill the real living people in this small country town. Perhaps this is why I live in the city and thoughts of Scooby-Doo moaning "RUT-RO, ROMBIES RAGGY, Is in the back of my lame mind!

We are sitting in the theater or at home on our comfy couches and we are scared by the mere fact these living dead people are on the rampage, out for the kill of the living, where the living are not aware of what is about to take place and the zombies are out for revenge! WHY? They WERE once LIVING, so what is the purpose of killing the living being they are now Zombies? Is it in their genetic make up that they must kill? Are they mad at the living that they are not Zombies like them and they want to hunt us down, slowly ( as I have not seen any Zombies moving fast with lightening speed, unless I've missed a few movies lately! Sorry! ) I will have to ask a Zombie should I ever encounter one, if I am lucky enough to survive their wrath!

My type of zombie would be Bernie! I always wanted a Weekend at Bernie's! Now that is MY kind of guy! He is flexible, carefree, a bit on the quiet side and bouncy, as long as congo music is playing nearby and he is not out for blood or about to mame anyone within the nearby vincinity!

I guess zombies being the living dead people that they are, do have their own appeal for the movie goers, where they can scare the Be-Jesus out of us for being the maniacal killers that they are. But dead. I believe Michael Myers is a Zombie. He just won't die! Sheeesh! Hollywood!
