Why having a website is necessary

by Jay F

Focusing on a niche market with your web design will increase your conversion rate and boost your bottom line.

With over a billion people using the Internet for anything and everything, it can be tempting to try and design a website to attract them all. Honestly, the allure of that large of a market is the chance to tap into as much of it as possible, right? Wrong. The Internet is about specialization and connecting with people who have similar interests. Just visit any chat room and look at how many different rooms are available! There is probably a room out there for pet rock lovers if you look hard enough!

We have become a society of specialists. The Jack-of-all-trades mentality simply has no place in today's world. People want to buy goods and services from businesses that specialize in those things because they demand expert service, advice, and support. This is why you need to focus your web presence on a specific niche market in order to optimize its effectiveness.

The first and most important thing to remember when focusing on a niche market is the target audience. Your web presence must be centered around that group of people. So, what socioeconomic factors unite your group? If you are selling medical supplies to hospitals and doctor's offices, then chances are that your audience is highly educated and will demand very informative and specific content. The same would not be true if you were selling comic books.

No matter what you might think, there are things that unite your potential customers. The content on your site and the very layout of that site should be geared towards appealing to those commonalities in your potential customers. In many cases, you can find out who your target market is and what common factors unite them by simply doing your homework. Most companies do a market analysis before launching a product or service and that information is out there in a lot of cases and does not cost anything.

In most cases, however, all you really need to do is think about your target audience and do some research on your product or service. Chances are very good that information is out there that will help you fine-tune your site to your target audience. Plus, there are companies out there that will design your site for you with this audience in mind. It may cost some money, but it may well be worth the investment.

In any event, don't set out to become the Wal-Mart of the Internet world. Even if you have different product lines or services, then create different sites for each separate group. This will help you with the search engine rankings because all of your content will be focusing on this one product or service. The search engines help 90% of all surfers to find what they are looking for so your web presence needs to be as focused as possible in order to have the best ranking. By paying attention to who your customers are and what unites them, you can design the site around those common traits so that they are comfortable when navigating it. Those companies that fail to focus their web presence on a niche market risk losing surfers and hurting their bottom line.
