The health benefits of fencing

The word health encompasses not only our physical being, but our mental and emotional states as well. The sport of fencing, which has been around since 1500 B.C., can give a good workout to your entire being.

In fencing, you learn endurance through the constant movement of footwork, lunges, and escape moves. It's good aerobic exercise, which makes the heart and lungs work to provide oxygen to all the body's systems. You'll burn calories and strengthen and tone the arm, leg, gluteal, back and chest muscles.

When on the defense, you must be agile enough to counter your opponent's attacks. Your defensive moves will aid in acquiring dexterity and agility. You'll improve your balance and coordination.

Learning the skills to fence properly and calculating your own and your opponent's moves will keep your brain in a flurry of activity. This will help with mental acuity and alertness. You will discover that you pay more attention to details in all your activities, not just fencing.

Emotionally, the satisfaction of learning the skills to win your matches along with the confidence that you are well equipped to compete and prevail in tournaments are of great benefit. Emotional health is as important as physical and mental health.

The physical, mental, and emotional benefits you will gain from fencing will help you succeed in whatever you choose to undertake.
