Budgeting is not a skill that most people were taught before they adventurously entered the adult world. It is a necessary skill for everyone to ensure that they can afford to live comfortably and without constant worry about where the next sum of money is coming from to pay bills.
For even the most non-monetary minded person setting a budget and sticking to it can be easy if they follow a few basic rules.
1. Take a notepad everywhere you go for you pay period (whether it be weekly, fortnightly or monthly). It is critical that you write down every expenditure for this period to understand where your money goes.
2. At the end of this period look at the income you have coming in and the expenditure going out. Most people find more outgoing than incoming.
3. Closely examine your outgoings. If you have found through step 2 that you spend more than you earn each pay, find cost cutting measures that can be implemented. Use your imagination to find alternatives to unnecessary expenditures.
4. Remember to allocate yourself a set amount each pay for you. Before paying any of your bills make sure you pay yourself and set this amount aside. Make sure this payment to you is realistic. If you have some money for you, you are more likely to stick to the budget when it comes to paying outers.
5. Make sure your expenditures are realistic. Under-estimating expenses in a budget s a guaranteed way of setting the budget up for failure.
6. If you have more bills to pay than income, contact creditors and try making arrangements for reduced payments. In some cases this may be the only way of making a budget work.
Working with these key budget rules can ensure that you maintain a practical and usable budget, satisfying everyones needs.
