Cake decorating as an art form

Art requires passion. When your cake decorating goes beyond reading the directions in the book and making a beautiful replica, then it has probably turned into an art form for you. When you look at ordinary things and wonder how you could add that to some kind of a cake you have probably entered the realm of an artist.

Pam, my favorite cake artist, started out as a cake decorator. She took many classes and perfected her technique. She learned about all types of frosting and fondants and all the terms ands basics. I had seen several wedding cakes she had made and they were beautiful. I can tell you the day that her craft changed into art.

Someone requested that she make a birthday cake and two large sheet cakes for a birthday party. She got all information about flavors and age and such. Then she said, "I can't do it until I meet the person having the birthday. " I was a little surprised. She had baked for me on several occasions without knowing the people. For whatever reasons the party agreed and she met the "birthday boy".

Her cake didn't match the theme of the party at all, but the "birthday boy" who was turning 45 loved the cake. She had somehow caught the essence of who he was and what he was feeling and created a cake. It looked like an earthquake to me. I didn't understand it at all. But the artist and the recipient couldn't have been more pleased.

She began to experiment more and combine more mediums. I love to go to her house and look at her cake books. She has photos and stories of all her cakes. She hasn't given up the traditional look on everything, but on every cake now there is something that says, "Pam was here".

So if you have a true passion for turning ordinary cakes into extraordinary cakes feel free to consider yourself a cake-decorating artist. If you have ever hear someone say about your cake, "Is that really a cake?' You are well on your way to becoming a famous cake decorating artist! Enjoy it and have fun.
