Cell phones: A love/hate relationship

In the world of cell phones and their ever-changing capabilities, their features at times overwhelm us. With instant digital cameras and video capability, you are ready to record anything just as it happens. You can now listen to MP3s and watch streaming video to catch up on the latest music and TV shows. If you are in the mood, you can also read breaking news just moments after it happens, or log onto your favorite blog site with just a few clicks. Cell phones are now permanently attached to our appendages and allow us to live a more connected life. For better or worse, we cannot get away from them.

Nevertheless, I say it is for the better sure it feels like a leash at times. I am always in contact or able to contact at a moments notice any of 50 people in my ever-present phone list. The upside is that I have access to EVERYONE and anything I need. However, ask me to recall anyone's number when I leave that little piece of plastic and circuits at home or the battery dies, and I become a dullard.

The cell phone has become the ultimate tool for anything you might need. From directions, GPS, and emergency assistance, to calling radio stations up to win tickets to see the Wham revival tour. I mean ANYTHING.

I will admit that other people doing the SAME THING I DO with their phones constantly bothers me. For example, they might be looking up the latest curling scores on FOXSPORTS or texting their buddies about what movie they want to see that night while driving 45 miles per hour on the freeway in the fast lane. Alternatively, having a loud and dirty conversation with their girlfriends on a full elevator just to have the call dropped due to poor reception. At that point they tear of their shirt, curse like a sailor while loudly proclaiming, "Captain Morgon has nothing on me!" (Or maybe that is just me.)

I do hate it when our phones distract us from important details, courtesy of others, and the loss of social awareness. Nevertheless, would you want to live without them now?
