The health benefits of fencing

Some may think that prancing around in funny white outfits and wearing alien looking helmets could be neither fun, nor benficial - but fencing is an ancient, refined sport that provides nourishment for the body mind and soul.

The body: Fencing improves balance, strength and coordination of both the upper and lower extremities. Fencing footwork requires an almost constant squatting stance. This stance will improve the tone and strength in your quads, hamstrings, and buttocks. Arm and shoulder strength is required to hold the foil, sabre or epee for long periods of time, as well as to ward off blows from your opponent. Coordination improves quickly as you learn to move your feet quickly and efficiently, while reacting to your opponents moves by parrying, or attacking your opponent. Eye hand coordination is a requirement for fencing, and with practice, may be the greatest physical benefit of fencing.

The mind: Fencing is much like chess. One must have a general plan, but also be flexible enough to respond appropriately to your opponent's moves. This requires quick thinking and decision making skills, as fencing is a fast paced sport. Exercising your mind in this way is a great way to exercise parts of your brain that may not get used throughout your regular day - and the skills you learn will be beneficial outside of the fencing environment.

The soul: While we may not like to admit it, most people have a dark side. Having a good old fashioned sword fight can release stress in a way that can't be imagined until you try it yourself. It is an intense battle of wills and wit, and it is very exciting to move in for the kill. Imagining your opponents to be people that you dislike, or who cause you stress, can bringing an even deeper release of tension - and do a surprising amount for your fencing skill level.

To get involved in fencing, and experience all of these great benefits, check to see if there is a club at your local university or college.
