As a traveler who loves to explore a country without restraints I would definitely prefer to visit Japan.

I would however exclude Hong Kong from China, as it has been influenced by the West for many years and is a delight to visit.
Although China has a fascinating history, culture and many wonderful sites,I still have difficulties being followed or told where to go and what to see.
I went to Taipei once, as we exited the plane to check through customs, we were escorted by armed guards ordering us to stand in a one person line, the custom's officer's questions were incessant.As it was 9Pm, we had to go to our hotels, where we found no hot water, no food,and we were not allowed to leave the hotel until the next day.
I also do not agree with China's human rights position.
On the other hand Japan welcomes you with open arms, the Japanese are fascinated by the Western world and have access to information and technology.
Japan has a lot to offer especially sites and culture, what is the most amazing about Japan is the coexistence of the classic Japan with all its traditions and the Ultra modern Japan at least in Tokyo and other major cities.
From the world biggest fish market, the ultra modern buildings in Tokyo to the beauty of the northern classic Hokaido, Japanese culture is fascinating.
The diverse architecture from very ornate ( Kyoto's temples) to the magical simplicity and beauty of temples throughout japan.
Japanese Art is also amazing and plentiful.
This country will introduce you to a fascinating cuisine , a lot more then the sushi bars widely spread in the USA.
The health benefits of the food in japan can be observed by the appearance of the Japanese people, very few are overweight.
One must also visit the traditional Kabuki theater, the karaoke bars, the noodle shops,and if you like gambling the "Pachinco', the Japanese version of the slot machine.
Japan offers a similar experience, mystical cultural unknowns without the overwhelming big Chinese brother on your back.
It is an exhilarating country and you will find yourself wanting to go back!
