First and foremost, I would like to make a distinction between "male-orientated" cinema and "female-orientated cinema" : There really are no distinctions if we're speaking of Hollywood. In "male-orientated" cinema, guys kill off other guys so he can end up w/ the highly prized woman. In "female-orientated" cinema, women kill off other women to get the cute and sensitive guy. Both stories end up w/ heavy sexual scenes in the end. The method of "killing" of course differs- the guy kills the other guy by guns or "kicking ass". The women are more subtle in their approach of killing- they do it slowly by gossiping to their friends about the other women of threat until the rival women ends up w/ a inferiority complex and she ends up killing herself mentally. These are of course the stereotypical roles that have both men and women fleeing to the theater at cut-throat speeds, stirring up the dust that covers the chained reality of their lives- the fact that they are bored and want an escape from it.
How does this explain the female as a sexual object? For the same reasons males are portrayed as sexual objects- to make money. How many romance novels depicting the muscle bound painting of a man on the cover make it into the cinema? Tons. Why? Money. Women pay to see men w/ bulging biceps in movies- it's the infamous wal-mart tabloid reading mommy lust complex. Married men open their wallets and rent horrible movies starring thong showing hip-hugger clad bad actresses for the same reasons- it's fruit in his looms that he can't have, so he escapes his wal-mart mommy for better looking pickins'- and this happens when she's right there beside him, clipping coupons- what a convenient outlet!
Sexual objects? Yes. And these objects of effectiveness go for both sexes when it comes to cinema. As long as men and women are paying for sexual objects in movies, Hollywood will be happy to reap the benefits from it.
