As an African American woman with natural hair, I have found that it requires more care than a woman with relaxed hair. I have naturally curly, medium length hair and in the humidity or on rainy days it turns into a handful of fuzz. I press my hair with a hot comb, not the type that we used back in the day that had to be heated on the stove, I have the type that you plug into the wall and can adjust the temperature on it. When it is very humid outside, I can barely go outside without having to pull it into a ponytail. When a person has to constantly pull their hair into a ponytail, it causes a lot of breakage which is not good for any type of hair especially natural hair.
Although natural hair can be very hard to maintain you find that you can style your hair with little to no maintenance at all if wanted. I can wash my hair and just put some type of moisturizer in it and go due to the curly texture, which tends to be more efficient during rain and humidity. It is not very often that you will see an African American woman that has natural hair that does not tie their hair up with some type of scarf before going to bed or taking a shower.
As most African American women should know and be able to relate to, they will not get into a swimming pool without having some type of covering on their head to protect their hair. Although you choose to keep your hair natural you should always make sure to find the right type of beautician. This is important because there are some that are more used to working with chemically treated hair and they can cause extensive damage to natural hair. Also make sure that you maintain proper care to your hair and get your ends clipped at least every two weeks to ensure for proper growth.
