Split ends no more

Unfortunately there is no cure or fix for split ends. Split ends are caused by the weakening of the cuticle layer of the hair. When the cuticle layer becomes to thin, due to age, environment, chemical and heat damage, it is no longer able to fully protect the cortex layer beneath it and the hair splits.

The only way to rid yourself of split ends is to trim your hair regularly. About every four to six weeks is sufficient for most people.

There are, however, some ways to prevent split ends from occurring.

Use pH Balanced Products:
Your hair has a pH of roughly 4.5 to 5.5, but most hair care products you find in your supermarket have a pH of nearly double that. The best thing you can do for your hair is to splurge on Salon products such as shampoo and conditioner. Salon products are pH balanced so that they fall in the same range as your hair does naturally. When you use higher pH products they will open the cuticle layer, making your hair more prone to damage.

Lay off the Tools:
Give your hair an occasional break from all the daily heat styling. Blow-drying, curling, and flat ironing are all damaging to the hair shaft.

Shade your Locks:
The sun, wind, and pollution all effect the strength of your hair. So when you go out for extended periods in the sun, such as a hike or day at the lake, cover your hair with a wide brimmed hat or scarf.

Just remember, that once the damage is done there is nothing you can do to repair it. But, with a few precautions you can protect your hair and keeping it looking it's best.
