of the most striking differences between Christianity and Zen
Buddhism, is the amount of importance that Zen places on the mundane world.
Zen seeks to attain enlightenment and self-betterment through
self-realization and understanding. Christianity, on the other hand places some
importance on the present world and how Christians conduct their lives
therein; however, it seems that much more emphasis is placed on the
afterlife, Heaven and Hell. The motivation behind Zen is mastery of
oneself, while the motivation behind Christianity is devotion to God to
attain paradise and avoid eternal damnation. This is not to make a value
judgment based upon motivation, but simply to illuminate differences.
The similarities and differences between Christianity and Zen are such
that they seem to be compatible. Through an interfaith dialogue, it is
possible that many Christians would be much more accepting towards Zen,
and perhaps even decide to incorporate some zazen into their daily
routine in an effort to find God.
