Taking a walk is the perfect time to start a "talk." This is true for married couples, a parent and a child, friends, or even someone you are in the midst of a conflict with. I'm not suggesting a cardio workout where you'll be huffing and puffing too hard to speak but a moderate walk taken in just about any surroundings. This simple step can improve the communication in any relationship.
For couples, a walk is a chance to get away from distractions that can get in the way of focusing on each other. No TV, phone, computer, chores, or kids will be vying for your attention when you decide to just take stroll around the block. If you have small children this need not be a hindrance to an intimate walk, just pack them up in a stroller or wagon or let older ones walk on ahead and be "the leader". Leave them with grandma or a neighbor you trust for 15 minutes. This habit helps ease stress and creates the perfect opportunity to reconnect at the end of the day. It doesn't take a lot of time, but it really makes a big difference in your quality of life. Making each other a priority in this way is a must for a healthy relationship.
As a parent there will be many times when the need to talk about something big with your child will arise. Taking a walk together can ease awkwardness and promote openness. Walking side by side instead of sitting across from each other staring right into the other persons face fosters a safe environment where delicate questions can be asked, sticky subject matter can be broached, and feelings can be shared. Taking the time to plan an outing in a park or out in nature will make the talk you are sharing more memorable and more likely to leave an impact.
Friends also benefit from the closeness of sharing a walk. As we get older and our time demands increase, old friendships that mean a lot to us can suffer greatly. It often feels we have no time to make new friends. Rekindling closeness requires commitment, so why not make a commitment with a friend to walk together for a good cause. Two gals can commit to getting involved in a breast cancer walk where they train together, raise funds together, make a difference together, and share an emotionally powerful experience together. You'll get caught up on each others lives in no time and benefit from an even deeper relationship than you had before.
Finally, walks are the perfect answer to dealing with conflict. Not only will getting out in the open assist all parties involved in keeping their temper, but sometimes a problem that once seemed insurmountable can be put into perspective after getting out and seeing that there is still life going on even though you are having a difficult time. Taking walks can help avoid conflict in the first place by alleviating pent up anxiety and energy that needs a healthy outlet. Even if the conversation reaches an impasse, walking together in silence can communicate your willingness to relate to this person despite the fact that you can't speak a civil word to one another.
