The first thing in this debate that needs to be addressed is the fact that government doesn't pay for anything. Taxpayers pay for everything that government does or mandates. That means the middle class pays for it. Not the rich and not the poor. Chances are, you and I pay for it.
The real question is: Should government require all individuals to have insurance?, or perhaps: Should government require insurance companies to cover any applicant regardless of past or present medical conditions?. The answer to each of those questions is YES. But should governmant be primarily responsible for the transfer of funds from the applicant to the insurance companies? The answer is an emphatic NO! All one has to do is look at the inefficiencies of government to realize that government involvement would quickly force the costs to escalate beyond the reach of the very individuals they are claiming to help. Thus forcing the taxpayers to foot the bill.
We, the taxpayers and voters should demand the government establish a baseline of what insurance must cover i.e. basic dental, eye exams/glasses, preventative medicine, doctor visits, emergencies, etc. The plan would cost a minimum amount like $20-$40 a month depending on number of dependents and also include a copay of $5-$10 per visit due before service is rendered. This would be for those individuals who make to much to qualify for various state and federal programs that are available to cover the poor.
The tax code already allows the insurance companies to deduct any costs that exceed the income from these policies. If there is any negative effect to insurance companies of instituting from this insurance program it would be the lowering of the value of the companies' shares. Therefore most of the losses would be incurred by those who own large blocks of stock in the insurance companies and those losses would primarily be on paper.
