Poetry: Smoking

Do I smoke? Why not give it a try?
I Can think of better things to buy
Why, why for goodness sakes
When I can learn from other smoker's mistakes
Cigarettes by the dozen I see you smoke
Next day you complain you're totally broke
The teeth of which you used to boast
Now resemble over done toast
There is nothing now your dentist can do
To restore those pearly whites back to you.

Your clothes smell, so does your hair
The odor is in the cushions, curtains, everywhere
This can't be fair, in every room
Stinky smoke like a bad perfume
What is that you said, take a hike
You're going to do exactly as you like
You're not carrying your smoke outside, you swear
Because your money pays the bills in here
The family to whom you swore devotion
Is being destroyed by your addiction.

Do you honestly think that it is healthy
Puffing all that smoke around the baby
Are you saying it doesn't bother you
Your kids don't want to cuddle as they used to do
Tell me too, that you don't miss
The sweetness of their mother's kiss
And that hacking cough, racking your chest
Breaking up your sleep and nightly rest
All of that you will endure daily
Just to emit smoke, are you a chimney?

The cough is getting worse,so after much nagging
From wife, friends and family, you give in
Off to the doctor for an examination
The smell is detected in your perspiration
Worse than that, see the doctor's frown,
Doesn't like what he sees on your lung
Aha, so now you are afraid
Stuff from your chest like the ace of spade
What on earth did you think you were doing
This surely is a coal mine in the making.

I can't tell the extent of what I see
Until you are taken to the surgery
Don't you cry and upset yourself
Together we can overcome this threat to your health
And you say to yourself things really dread
The way it is looking I might soon be dead
Lord I am leaving everything to You
It is only You now can see me through
And if You see it fit to bring me through this
I will live my life differently, that's a promise.

Puff away at that tobacco stick,
    watch as stress fades away-
    the neatest little trick
    nearly five dollars will pay;

    There is

    Twit!
    Smell lingers
    Brown fingers
    Burn holes
    All my clothes
    Throat scratches
    Out of matches
    Morning hack
    Empty pack
    What a twit!
    I

    Each day, just after
the warm glow of dawn lights up
    the diminishing night sky,
    an individual and smoking light
    comes into existence

I am in a cloudy room.
    It is full of smoke.
    Everyone is puffing cigarettes.
I hear someone begin to choke.

    They inhale each taste
