When driving a company car you have to remember a few things. You'll have to remember that this isn't your vehicle and that you'll need to operate this vehicle as if it were your own or in some cases treat it better than you treat your own vehicle.
The Dos and Don'ts of driving a company vehicle are as follows:
1. Make sure you fill the tank with gas before dropping off the company vehicle or when picking it up. You are ultimately responsible for the fueling of the vehicle (most companies use company gas cards when an employee is given use of a company car)
2. Make sure to maintain the proper speed limits when you are driving the company vehicle. If you get a ticket most companies will make you pay that ticket and if you get in an accident you might be taking a walk on the unemployment line.
3. Do not drink and drive. Not only can this get your fired from your job, but it can also get you jailed. (Not recommended in any vehicle!)
4. Do not smoke cigarettes in the company vehicle. Unless this is approved from your employer it is never a good idea to smoke in your companies vehicle, it ruins it for other employees in the company that might use the same company car as well.
These are just a few of the Dos and Don'ts that should be observed. If you use common sense when using your company's vehicle, then you will automatically avoid some of the common Don'ts and you will be on the right path for safe and sane use of your company's vehicle.
For the companies that are allowing their employees the use of their vehicles it's important for you to make sure that the vehicles are safe to drive and that your employees are complying with the rules that you have set forth. Make sure that the vehicles are well cared for and that all the proper maintenance has been and will continue to be performed on a regular basis so that there is no safety issues relating to improper care for the vehicle on the company's part.
The company that allows their employees to use their vehicles needs to have some sort of check list that the employee must fill out prior to using the vehicle. The company must make sure that the potential driver has a good clean driving record and that can handle the vehicle that they are going to be using for the company. Included in the checklist would be questions such as, how much gas was in the vehicle when you got it? Was there any damage to the vehicle prior to driving the vehicle? Then some follow up questions after returning the vehicle such as; did you fill the vehicle with gas? Did anyone else drive the vehicle? There are many more questions that can be asked.
