What lies behind the concept of the evil eye

by Jobey M

Do you have The Evil Eye?

You won't have been long in Turkey, and you won't have gone far before you begin to wonder What are all these blue eye things I keep seeing, and what are they for'?
For the answer to these two questions read on.

Once upon a time there was a rock by the sea that even with the force of a hundred men and a lot of dynamite couldn't be moved or cracked. There was also a man in this town by the sea, who was known to have the evil eye (Nazar). After much effort and endeavour, the town's people took the man to the rock, and the man, upon looking at the rock said, "My God! What a big rock!" The instant he said it, there was loud crack, and instantly the immense and impossible rock was found to be cracked in two.

Such is the power of the evil eye'. With this kind of power on the loose, you'd better have something to protect yourself with.
This is where the little blue eye's come in. They are called Nazar Boncuk'. Nazar' means look' or glance' although the usual translation is taken as The evil eye', as in the story above. Boncuk' means bead' or amulet'.
Therefore our little blue eyes are not what a lot of people incorrectly call The evil eye', but The evil eye amulet'. And that is why they're so popular; they protect you from the power of the evil eye.

Here is another well known story. A woman gives birth to a healthy child with pink cheeks. All the neighbors come to see the baby. They shower the baby with compliments, commentating especially on how healthy and chubby the baby is. After getting so much attention, weeks later the baby is found dead in his crib. No explanation can be found for the death. It is attributed to Nazar.
That's why you will nearly always see a small Nazar Boncuk fixed to the new baby's clothes.

So you should use a Nazar Boncuk to protect yourself, your house, your office or your loved ones. A Nazar Boncuk can be seen dangling from the interior mirrors of cars, pinned to the clothes of babies, incorporated into the structure of new buildings and countless other places in Turkey. If you want to use it in your house you should hang it at the entrance, so any visitor will see it. If you want to wear a Nazar Boncuk, small ones can be pinned on your clothes, or your bag. You can also find bracelets, earrings or necklaces in various forms.
The protection of the Nazar Boncuk is also used for anything new or likely to attract praise, so when your friends say, Oh what a lovely new BMW you have', it's time to replace those fluffy dice with
