When I was a snowboarder in high school I knew the perfect place to go for runs that would get my blood pumping. It was a beautiful, untouched mountain; it was also free. Since then they have cleared a few runs and added a ski lift (we couldn't keep it a secret forever) but they have not changed the feel of the mountain. Mount Bohemia, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, is still very much the natural ski area that I remember with the benefit of not having to trudge through the powder to get to the top.
Here you can find runs that are nearly a mile long and 900 feet of vertical drop as well as the kinds of cliffs, chutes and fall-line skiing that are otherwise unheard of in the Midwest. The hill does not permit beginners, but for experienced skiers it can provide the experience of a lifetime.
The unique setting and proximity to one of the largest bodies of fresh water in North America eliminates the need for manufactured snow. Upper Michigan sees some of the largest annual snowfall totals this side of the Rockies. You will not see any grooming on this hill, leaving a thick blanket of powder and an opportunity for early risers. Though they have done some tree removal, as is necessary to turn it from a local secret to a national hot-spot, you can still find ample backcountry skiing. Many avid skiers have already put Bohemia on their list of yearly destinations and, on December 8th, 2007, season passes can be had for $99.
The surrounding community is welcoming and comfortable. The Upper Peninsula of Michigan (or U.P. as it is referred to locally) is dotted with small towns. Despite the large land area only 3% of the state's population resides here, so it will never feel crowded or rushed. You will easily find inexpensive accommodations. Rooms within 10 miles of the hill can be rented for as low as $44 per night, but if you want to stay trailside you can rent a cabin that sleeps four people for just over $100.
It is never difficult to find a bar for the weary skier to relax. Keweenaw Brewing Company, The Michigan House and The Library are three excellent local breweries within 30 miles. The town of Copper Harbor, just 10 miles from Bohemia, is home to The Pines (a well known best for breakfast), Zick's Bar and the Mariner North. If you prefer to cook for yourself you can pick up a few groceries at the Gas Lite General Store. Any of these establishments can provide you with local information or pleasant conversation.
This is the perfect destination for any athlete looking to escape into the wilderness for some extreme skiing and quiet living. In the future Bohemia may suffer the pains of success as many other popular ski destinations have: high prices, crowds and chain restaurants, but for now its splendor remains unspoiled. Skiing here is one of the last opportunities that combine the intensity of the sport, affordability and some of the most breathtaking country in the world.
