How to manage your online learning schedule

Many colleges and universities are recognizing the need for more convenient options for students. Although distance learning has been around for quite some time, most schools are now introducing online learning programs that allow students to view lectures, turn in papers, and take tests online.

Unfortunately, without the structure of classes and more lax rules about attendance and participation, it might be difficult for some students to manage their online learning schedules and truly benefit from this convenient learning method. So, how can you effectively manage your online learning schedule and succeed as an online student? Keep the following suggestions in mind to help you.

First and foremost, your success as an online student will rely greatly on your ability to organize, prioritize, and schedule your work. Keep a calendar and set aside blocks of time for your online courses. If you need to watch videos online, be sure that you know exactly how long they will be so that you can set aside ample time to complete the video, e-mail your professor with any questions you may have, and simply achieve any other required coursework. A calendar can help you stay organized with deadlines and other critical dates.

Secondly, don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it. Simply because you're an online student, doesn't mean that your instructors should treat you any differently from full-time, traditional students. If you are confused or lost in the material, don't be afraid to ask for assistance from your professors. Always e-mail your professor with any questions or concerns you may have. If you need more time or tutelage, ask if you can schedule a meeting during their office hours so that you can ask your questions face-to-face before you attempt to tackle the online assessments.

Finally, be sure to keep up with your work. When taking classes online, particularly with courses that are not set up on a regular schedule and can be taken at any time, it is easy to procrastinate with your work. If you truly want to succeed as an online student, you're going to have to be sure that you are dedicated and determined to complete your assigned work.
