Poetry: Darkness

The Veil

Each day I dwell in agony
When Darkness chases after me
In ruthless pursuit, on my trail
Anxious to wrap me in its cruel veil

Alas, I succumb, no match for its power
The darkness within creates my darkest hour
No longer the hunted, a prisoner instead
I question myself, am I better off dead?

Do I surrender, find the comfort inside?
I wouldn't have to run, or fight, or hide
My mind in a furor, searches my soul
The oppression of darkness takes its toll

Darkness, the core of my deepest sorrow
What good is an impending tomorrow?
I'm tired of fighting the dark, so strong
It would be my demise, I knew all along

Then a sudden bright flash
Reveals my salvation
Instilled within me upon my creation
An unselfish person, it dawns on me
I need to live for my family

I summon what's left of my will to survive
Suddenly desperate to emerge alive
I battle the darkness, the veil starts to give
I want to get free, damnit, I want to live
