Joshua possessed the character quality of irresolution. Good leaders and good team members do not make decisions without goals, and the goals are not ever-changing. Joshua decided to check out the new territory not for curiosity sake, but to fulfill the goal of complying with God's command to conquer the promised land. The goal of the whole book of Joshua is to enter and conquer the promised land. Ministers (leaders) and team members are conquerors. God gives us weapons to conquer.
The sword (the Word of God) in Ephesians 6:17 is a weapon. The sword is a guidance system. God speaks to your inner person based on the written Bible. God guides us into revelation of who our enemies are and who our friends are. Friends and enemies have certain qualities described in the Bible. When Joshua sent out the scouts into Jericho, notice that God guided the scouts to select a friend (Rahab) in enemy territory. Leaders surrounded with good team members can participate in miracles. In Joshua 3 when Joshua and the Israelites were faced with the Jordan river as an obstacle to entering the promised land, Joshua did not have to deal with team members who lacked the fruits of the Holy Spirit. The Israelites did not complain that there was no boat to take them over the Jordan, they just stepped into the river and waited for God to provide the miracle. They were confident in God's ability to conquer problems and in Joshua's leadership submitted to God. If your team is complaining, they may be saying that they have no confidence in you. No confidence; no courage. A team lacking courage will not participate in greatness.
