The most pointless reason to write a novel

The most pointless reason to write a novel is for the money.

There's a notion out there that writing a novel is an easy way to make some quick cash - nothing could be further from the truth. Not only must you have a story to tell, but you must have a passion for telling it.

Then, you must have the discipline and commitment to actually *do* it - harder than it sounds.

And then you get to redo it, editing and polishing until it's done. But even then, *you* aren't done. Oh, no - now you get to shop it around. If you're smart, first to a few trusted friends for critique. Then to agents and/or publishers - all of whom are liable to tell you that your beautiful creation isn't quite the world-beater you thought it was.

Once you've amassed a stack of rejection letters (none of which, despite popular wisdom, get any easier) you may actually sell it. And, generally (and particularly for a first novel) for a whole lot less that you expected.

Writing a novel with dollar-signs in your eyes is a fool's game; best avoided.
