Over the summer, Manchester United have splashed the cash on Hargreaves, Anderson, Nani and Tevez. Hargreaves and Tevez have proven themselves to be decent players in their careers so far but the same cannot be said of Nani and Anderson. Perhaps this is why there has been widespread criticism about United's spending spree. Much has also been said of the club's mounting debts.
I do not believe for once that Malcom Glazer bought the club just to see it crumble. These people are not novices in managing sporting clubs. They are astute businessmen who know how to manage a worldwide brand. The fans should trust him to make sound financial decisions. If the owner of the club feels comfortable to give money to Sir Alex to spend, the fans should have the faith that the math has been done correctly.
We need to put a little bit of perspective to the amount United are forking out for these players. Firstly, despite their massive price tags, only a part of their transfer fees are actually paid up front. A significant percentage actually includes first team and international appearances, league titles, goals and other future contributions. If the new recruits prove to be worthy additions to the team, it will bring success in the form of titles and the prize money would more than make up for the money spent on these players.
Also, we need to take into account the players that were sold during the summer. The sale of Alan Smith (6m pounds), Giuseppe Rossi (6m pounds) and Gabriel Heinze (8m pounds) served to ease the finances of the club substantially.
All four players are relatively young. Barring any career-ending injuries and transfers to other clubs, they should be able to contribute massively to the squad. If they can improve and go on to become world beaters, people would be labelling their price tags as bargains in the future.
Perhaps the only criticism that I can make for the summer spending is that a more traditional target man was not bought. This deficiency in an otherwise excellent squad was apparent as United struggled to beat opponents convincingly in the first few games of the season. Many have said that Tevez and Rooney are too similar in style to play together. However, I believe that good players would learn to play off each other eventually.
