The Isle of Palms is a secluded getaway in the heart of the Atlantic coast, and a perfect place for those wishing to soak up the sunshine without the crowds. This barrier island has been home to pirates, Native Americans, and now is one of best places to escape and relax.

The island has 7 miles of coastline, so there's no lack of things to do if you do tire of lounging on the beach. If you enjoy kayaking, Coastal Expeditions (50 41st Ave, 843-884-7684) specializes in custom tours for all levels of experience, and, for the more thrill seeking visitor, Tidal Wave Watersports (69 41st Avenue, 843-886-8456) offer para-sailing from 600 to 1000 feet above the ocean! There are also several beach volleyball courts and picnic areas along the beach, as well as places to rent bicycles for those who would prefer to keep both feet on dry land.

Golfers will be in their element here, there are two fantastic courses, Harbor Course, which features three holes on the Intra-coastal Waterway and two marsh front finishing holes while The Links Course is ranked 26 among America's Top 75 Upscale Public Courses by Golf Digest.

Nature lovers can enjoy unsurpassed natural beauty with Barrier Island Eco Tours (50 41st Ave, 843-886-5000). Visitors, guided by a local marine biologist, can explore the undeveloped Capers Island, as well as seeing dolphins, birds and alligators. Or take the Bull Island Ferry (departs from Garris Landing off Hwy. 17, 843 884-7684) through the Cape Romain Wildlife Refuge, which is home to red wolves and loggerhead turtles.

You don't need to go on a tour to see the turtles though, these beautiful creatures return to the Isle of Palms every spring to nest, and while it's unlikely you'll see the eggs hatching, in quieter areas it is possible to catch a glimpse of a turtle sunbathing on the beach. Be careful though, the turtles are a protected species, and should be treated with respect.

A little known spot is Fort Moultrie National Monument, this maritime defense museum is quiet, and is near a small secluded beach. This a perfect place to take a stroll, bone up on local history, and listen to the Atlantic waves.

The Isle of Palms is perfect for a relaxing escape, with sunshine, history, fishing and water sports; you have the option to do as much, or as little, as you please, at your own pace, and in your own time.
