Okay! Here we go! This is a plate of hot, quivering gruel that I can dig on into! First off I'd like to say that while I am proud elitist horror snob, meaning that I can get into a deep pretentious conversation on the artistic and creative aspect of many a filmmaker. I am also a VERY proud gore hound. Now, does this mean that I need gore to enjoy a horror movie? Absolutely not. Some of my favorite horror movies hardly have an ounce of blood. A good example would be the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Barely any blood, let alone "gore". A good horror movie derives it's scares from atmosphere and tension. Chainsaw was all about atmosphere and if you've seen the movie you know that the dinner scene was all about tension. Now, while I do love a good classic horror movie, I also can't live without a good "sauce" movie. And think about it, one of the most terrifying things you could see would be you own viscera strewn out around you. Am i right? Oh shut up, of course I am! So gore is a scary thing. And sometimes the only saving grace of many a bad movie is the gore. Look at Peter Jackson's Bad Taste or Braindead. Not Oscar material by any stretch but the overt gore and violence makes them two of the most fun gore-fests to watch. So, no gore isn't necessary unless you lack the story telling aspect of a good filmmaker(M. Night, I'm talkin' to you!) but c'mon, isn't watching someone being slowly pulled apart a gut-load of fun? Think about that the next time you drive by a car wreck and just about break your neck tryin' to get a peek at some grue!
