Romance writing: Tips for crafting that crucial first chapter

or women who may be the villain of the piece, is an essential ingredient for connectivity and holding the readers attention and interest.

If the story is to be a love affair, it is relevant to bring in the component parts of romancee as an experience, including the pleasure and hurt, exhileration and sadness. Most of us have experienced the emotions of love and romance at some time in our lives and the romantic novel reader will expect to be taken on a journey through the emotional complexity of a love story in fiction. Therefore, an element of the first chapter of romance will concentrate upon the emotional content and build-up required to make the love journey complete.

Building the first chapter of a romantic novel is the same as with any other genre. You need to set the scene, both physically and emotionally, introduce the principal characters, each of which should be multi-dimensional and therefore believable to the audience. Finally, the chapter should include at least a hint of where the story will be leading the reader, even if that hint is to be surrounded in intrigue. Appealing to the readers' sense of emotion, time, location and intrigue will make for an attractive and appealing novel, one which the reader will not want to put down unfinished.
