Wal-mart is currently one of the biggest companies in the world, and is still growing year upon year, showing no signs of slowing. Through their sheer size and financial clout they can offer shoppers much lower prices than most other places, and can command massive economies of scale for all their products from their suppliers.

This is the reason why i believe they would be well suited to enter the market of banking. To look at it objectively they do have little or no experience in the financial sector, but then compared to most banks they would be much more stable from having their main source of income in their stores to keep them afloat.

With their billions of dollars they could of course also afford the best financiers money can but to run their bank, and with virtually limitless funding, they could afford to offer their customers a lot of services and deals which other banks might struggle to compete with. They could even integrate some of their services with their banking, for example savings on groceries for having certain amounts of money in wal-mart accounts, which a lot of banks couldn't match.

The worry of a lot of people is that wal-mart is becoming too powerful as it now offers almost every service you could imagine, and is constantly expanding its products and services. The reality is however that a lot of other big supermarkets are now moving into banking and insurance as well. Tescos for example, the biggest chain in the UK and many parts of Asia is offering car and home insurance, and is finding that they are very successful because of the convenience of the policies being available in store, and them already being a trusted name to consumers which a lot of banks and other financial institutions aren't.
