Celebrities, and charity fundraising are a natural partnership of interests in many instances. Practically all celebrities are in search of high-profile publicity, and most charities can provide precisely that type of exposure providing their cause is worthwhile, and that they understand the basics of publicity.
A publicist representing the interests of a charity needs to do their homework regarding finding an appropriate celebrity for their purposes. Most celebrities disclose the areas of their personal interests as a matter of their own publicity. Charities whose mission relates to specific diseases, for example, should be encouraged to look for a celebrity who has a personal interest in their area. A little research can yield a bonanza of useful information.
If your charity fundraising is in a major market area, there will be no shortage of potential "stars" looking for good press. Your long-list may include notable politicians, musicians, actors, and even local heroes of note. Most charities look for someone that will make an appropriate "public face" for the charity. The more publicity available, the more potential candidates there will be to become the face of any charity.
Practically everyone is raised with the instruction by their parents "to do the right thing". No matter how busy one becomes, there is always an inner voice that commands us to do the things that we should do as a matter of conscience. No one ever forgets his mother's instruction to be nice, and do the right thing. Any charity seeking a little star-power to help in their promotions should ever forget that basically everyone would like to do good things.
In summary, doing one's homework is essential. Being organized is also quite important. An extensive amount of positive publicity in place for a fundraising will help tremendously as to making celebrity participation desirable. In short, if you can provide the high visibility exposure of a positive note, the stars will appear! It is similar to the premise of "The field of Dreams"; If you build it, they will come.
