Computers can be really great for children. They can be educational, as well as they are going to be a big tool that they use while they are in school. There are so many things that they can learn on a computer. Computers can become addictive though. You want to make sure that your child is not on the computer all the time. Too much is a not a good thing.
Another thing to take into consideration is what kind of content they are seeing on the computer. Do you have some kind of protection on the computer to limit which websites your children can view? There are tons of software that can help you protect your children, but if you do not have anything like that, you will want to closely monitor what websites they are visiting to make sure that they are not getting into trouble.
Make a daily schedule of what they do. Limit computer times to a couple of hours right after dinner. This way you will still be awake to see what they are doing, but they still have a lot of time to be on. Computers are great in that you can learn so much from them, and I think that they are beneficial in the long run. They are using computers so much in school now, that they teach them at such a young age how to do things.
Purchase or download educational software. This will benefit both you and your children because they can pick out their favorite characters and what looks fun to them, and you will know that they will be doing educational things while they are learning how to use a computer. You can find lots of good deals on the internet as well as at your discount stores.
Disable internet access on your computer when you children are on the computer. This allows you to leave them on the computer without your supervision and you know that they will be safe. I never recommend that you ignore them, but if you have other things to do this may be your only option. Children these days are smarter than you think, and I am sure they know how to get on the internet even if you think they do not.
Work out a plan with your child on when they can and cannot use the computer. Compromise with your child because it is important that they do spend time on the computer to learn, but there is other activities that they can be doing that are also educational. Sit down with your child and help them, it's a great opportunity to bond with them.
