Are we creating a complacent generation?

Most people-excepting the Presidents advisor's-are familiar with The Boy Who Cried Wolf. One of the modern worlds greatest problems, is constantly reminding everyone of the worlds greatest problems, not to mention keeping them in a constant state of readying for impending doom, only to be let down time and time again.

Remember the book The Population Bomb, and the English demographer Malthus. Both proposed literally the same thing: the future held mass starvation due to the population rate outstripping the food production rate. God knows there are many hungry people in the world and a lot of suffering, but the predictions of hundreds of millions starving to death did not come true, mainly due to the green revolution and the vast increase in yields per acre.

How about all the science fiction movies, which have told of everything from nuclear holocausts to alien invaders with very bad dispositions, incinerating our dysfunctional species, either for the sheer thrill of it, or because they were disappointed with our relative evolution, not to mention our SAT scores. There has even been a science fiction piece masquerading as a documentary called the "Hellstrom Chronicle" that painted the survival genius of insects in the most ghastly possible light! If you cant trust anything above you and you cant trust anything below you, you're definitely going to become paranoid; and that paranoia will eventually result in psychic exhaustion if not relieved.

If modern entertainment and propaganda techniques-sometimes it's difficult to differentiate between them-contained themselves to just theoretical disasters, our shocked and awed cerebrums might be able to ride it out. That's just prep for the true terrorization: Operation Inadequate Family. If you don't study on how to give your wife proper orgasms, somebody else will. If you don't watch your children closely, they will be befriended by a sexual predator or arrested for illegally downloading recordings. Your daughter will get impregnated; your son will be offered Crank; you are getting too fat; your husband is being weaned away from marriage by pornography! Do I even have to mention what happens if your husband is a smoker who looks at pornography while voting for Liberal candidates. YIKES!

So much of capitalism is driven by this fear-of mentality: so much of what we buy is characterized as something we have to have; unless we want to sit there like complacent and reactive human victims, we need
