Tips for keeping a journal like a professional writer

You can keep a personal journal like many professional writers. Here are some steps to get you own writer's journal started. If you follow these steps, you will have a writing journal that will serve you well in your writing life.

1. What is your purpose? Write a sentence that verbalizes your reason for writing. This can be your mission statement of sorts. Read your statement out loud and rewrite it until it is YOU.

2. hink in categories to get yourself started. Write down the categories or topics on which you want to reflect. What are the important thoughts and experiences you want to record? Begin with the end in mind, if possible.

3. Make this journal your own. Allow yourself to reach deep into your heart and soul to put your feelings, constructive or destructive, into words.

4. Give your journal writing importance by making it part of your daily schedule. Just like you would not skip an appointment, do not ignore your time to write in your journal.

5. Open the gates and let your thinking and your emotions flow. Like a rough draft, do not be encumbered by editing and proofing. Sentence fragments? Leave them. Run-ons?
Quickly fix them if they bother you, then keep moving.

6. Care about your journal. Make it a labor of love. On a given day, you may dislike or hate your journal, but overall, your journal should be your best friend.

Lastly, keep your journal in a place of honor. As you take it out and put it away each time, think of how this important work will have value to you as you live your writing life.
