Generally speaking, jogging or running on roads is not a dangerous practice in and of itself. Most drivers have a higher risk of getting hit because runners are careful and make wise road choices.
However, running on the the road might produce other problems. Asphalt isn't that soft of a running surface, but runners should always choose road over sidewalk. Sidewalks are almost always several times worse for your legs. Running on a smooth track or on level dirt or grass are good alternatives. Why level? Running on an uneven surface can distribute the forces unevenly between your legs, leading to an imbalance, or possibly an injury. Running on the road can provide a consistently level surface, but be sure to watch out for potential unevenness on the side of the road.
Many precautions can be taken to prevent accidents:
Runners should always run against traffic. It's much easier to see a car approaching you from the front than hear one from the back. Which leads into our next point, something I'm sure most of you don't want to hear:
Don't listen to music while road running. Your mind becomes unfocused, which leads to decreased awareness. You can't hear anything approaching, whether it's a car, or even an attacker. I have seen a runner literally crash into a street sign while blasting away loud music. Save the tunes for the treadmill.
Be visible. This is especially important when running at night. Get a reflective vest or a light. Get a Road ID. These are little tags that will provide important information to rescuers if you are found.
Be safe. Runners sometimes think that they are above the law. Don't think that you can just run a stop sign or dash out into the middle of the street without looking.
With the proper care and a little attention, road running is a valuable choice that can greatly enhance your running.
