Short stories: Escape

Squish The Fish

Life is so boring. I swim and swim and never get anywhere. I can see the World Beyond, but there is this invisible barrier in the way. My nose is so sore from landing against it and I really want to get past. My friends are on the other side of the Big Space and I wish I could go and play with them. They are having so much fun chasing each other and swimming amongst the weeds. Look at them! They are nothing but show offs. Hope they get eaten by the fabled Sucking Stone Fish! That would serve them right for being such snobs. Just look at that, tail flicks and jumping about. It is making me feel rather sea sick just watching them. And they know I'm here by myself too. Wait until I get my fins on them!

Oh, here comes the Big Gill-less One. It had better have something tasty for me to eat. Fish flake again! What do you think I am? Stupid?! I want shrimp and I want them now! It didn't hear me! What is going on? Do I speak a different language? No, I don't want an answer. I can see It has no bubbles coming from It's Noise Hole.
How long has it been since I was put in this place? It seems like forever. Why can't I leave? And where is my Hidey Hole? I want to go back to the Big Wet! Oh please, take me back! I want to go home! This place is no fun at all! A Fish like me needs to have space and lots of it. I need to be able to hide and play and find my own food. This World is not my home and my School is not here. Oh, I miss them all so much.

What is It doing now? What is that green thing It's putting in with me? Help! I'm stuck! I can't breathe. Quick, put me back in the Wet, I'll die without it. That's better, but where has It stuck me now? No! This place is even smaller! Look, my tail touches one end and my nose touches the other. What has It done to me? I want to go home! Now what are you doing? Why are you taking all the Wet out of that World? I need that. Oh, woe is me. I need help and no one is giving it to me. What is the world coming too!

I'm a fish and demand respect! Why don't I get it like the Furry Fisher or the Squawking Feather Head? Just look at them! They have it all! The Furry Fisher rolls around all day. Stupid creature! Look at it kissing itself. You'd think it was the Queen of All, the way it carried on. And there's the Squawking Feather Head bobbing away, moving from place to place on its sharp moving sticks. Ssshhh you horrible thing! Even I can hear you way over here in the Wet. Why don't the Gill-less One's play with me the way they
