How can I get a good rating on Helium? There are some basic rules. These also apply to any writing website where rating is part of the game. To get a good rating, you should know and follow the criteria. Then you should add extras.
On Helium, your article should be a minimum of 1200 characters or at least 200 words. That is readily apparent on the writing pad, as it is the second last thing you read before writing. However some people like to write with a word processor, then copy and past to the Helium writing pad.
Give your writing effort some form or structure. When a writer rates an article, the most obvious fault of an article is the lack of form. One big blob or words without paragraphs is easy to spot and dislike. You may not even get a second chance is the writer, rater is having an attitude. Write in paragraphs.
Write in sentences. That seems readily apparent but writing in full and complete sentences is basic to writing. Do not write in run on sentences. Run on sentences are thought that say two related or not so related things. Be easy to read.
Use spell check. Most raters will forgive the odd mistake in spelling. Writers will develop an attitude after seeing three or more spelling mistakes in an article.
Write in excess of 200 words. Even writing 300 words, shows more of an effort when compared to a 'just acceptable' 200 words.
How you say it matters. Writing with authority is more credible than writing with uncertainty. It is also important to get your facts straight. Saying something funny or amusing will also get you points.
Stay on topic. You can tell a story or anecdote to underline your point but do not stray from the topic. You can publish a great article but if you are off topic, writers won't be generous with you.
Watch your tone of voice. Sometimes I whine at the word. Sometimes I am filled with indignation, especially at the debates. Your tone of voice should underline your point but sometimes you need to restate your writing (revise) and keep your tone of voice in check.
Wait for the rating system to work for you. It may take days or weeks. You may eventually make numbers and eventually even loose the pre-eminent post.
Finally rate fairly. If you do honest work, your fellow writers will rate you honestly and fairly.
