Choosing which subjects to do at GCSE
In year 9, or even in year 8, it may seem like it will be a long time until you have to even consider what you will do when you leave school, but if you are thinking about it now you are on the right track! Making such important choices (because I am not going to lie to you they are important) can be a stressful and confusing time, so it is important that you think rationally about what options are available to you.
So what should you do? If you have a definite career or university in mind, then get active and look at websites or a prospectus although specific parts of the course may change from year to year, the basics will remain the same. If you don't have a career in mind, still have a look and get a general feel for what you may need (as most universities, apprenticeships or jobs have standard requirements for all students.)
If you are looking at your choices for year 9, your subject choices will probably be somewhat limited (check out which subjects are compulsory and which can be taken as options), but it is vital that you investigate what the course will require. Find out whether your course will be more theoretical or vocational, and find something that will suit your needs for example some subjects are 100% examination, whilst others require coursework. Does your school offer only GCSE's, or does it offer BTEC courses as well, maybe even more!
Whatever you do, don't just make your decision based on the fact that your friend is doing that subject, or you like your current teacher the teacher may change and although it's nice to be with your friends, you have to choose what is best for your future, not theirs! The most important thing to do though is do what you enjoy, there is no point agreeing to study a subject for two years (or more if you want to do A-level) if you have no enthusiasm or interest in it.
I would also suggest keeping your options open when you decide, although you may have your heart set on a specific career now, your hopes and interests may change, and it is important that your range of subjects will be able to cover this.
Whatever choices you decide to make good luck for the future!
