Writing tips: How to write a choose-your-own-adventure story

An interactive form of story-telling, a choose-your-own-adventure story brims with multiple choices and plots lines that invite numerous rereading, thus being an enjoyable alternative to the usually linear plot of the novel. However, this in turn incurs a ton of other problems as the writer has to cover the various aspects of the story, as well as rewriting the same story numerous times, and congealing them into a cohesive and tangible storyline that is at the same time exhilarating and insightful.

Quite a challenge indeed.

However, a choose-your-own-adventure story is also slightly simpler in terms of character creation, precisely because your reader is the one that considers the logic and motive behind each action, allowing the writer to leave the decision making process to the reader to decide.

Most choose-your-own-adventure stories are set in a fantasy world or alternate universe, however, making for a much less complicated plot background, and thus more possibilities for adventures to occur. There should also be an objective for the reader to strive towards. A search for a legendary treasure? A quest to recover a lost artifact? With that in mind, the character the reader plays must also be considered. Is he or she a warrior-hero? A wandering swordsman? A sorcerer? Certain writers even go so far as to create an entire alternate universe, in which the factors of the different universe could be used.

Next off would be the system of your adventure story. Certain stories require complicated methods of calculation and extensive material to proceed, but you could always look to the basics first. Would your character have an inventory? If so, the element of items would be present in the story, and the presence of items in a character's inventory would affect the plot developments in a story. Does your story contain the element of combat? If so, you would have to develop a battle system to compute the success rates of the character surviving the battle. Another common element is chance, which consists mainly of the affecting of the storyline via pure luck, mostly decided via a dice throw. Certain stories may even include other elements such
