School bus safety is a good topic to discuss only because you the parent the guardian are not personally there with your child and mainly in elementary and pre-school is where the main concern may be. Seeing that on a pre-school bus most of the young children on the bus cannot buckle them selves in, there are supervisors present who will check on this before leaving the parking lot.
Although in Elementary school where children are a bit older than pre-school can comprehend the seat belt and other safety issues on a bus. At local Elementary schools there are days where students will have a chance to practice escaping from a bus on fire(just drills)or what to do if in a dangerous position on the bus. Like using the Emergency Exits on the bus and sitting properly and why you shouldn't distract the bus driver.
Which I'd see distracting the bus driver and mischievous acts would happen most likely on Middle School and High School buses. Which by then kids should at least hear about one bus accident and see that safety is an issue. Teaching your kids how to ride a bus, I don't think is easy because your not there and wouldn't know the environment including other children and how they act and influence your child. Of course you should talk to your child about bus safety, like if he/she comes home to you and says "the other kids on the bus jump around and throw paper balls." Thats when you'll know your child is being affected and might think about trying these things too. A solution may be to talk with your child about acting responsible(which may be hard to understand as a young child)but as long as you are getting a point across to them that throwing papers may distract the bus driver and disturb other kids and jumping around maybe harmful if something should happen, as in a young child falling and getting hurt or harming another child.
