How prosperity has overshadowed our values and beliefs

The entire world has been, is, and will forever be consumed with a desire for more. It is an unending, viscous war, and comes at the cost of many lives that would have been lived happily. Commonly believed is the notion that wealth and prosperity brings happiness. Yet the wealthiest and most prosperous of people always want another dollar. This desire is unquenchable and to those who seek it, it will be obtained, no matter the cost.

Values such as family time and love have been trampled under the feet of men and women who seek prosperity. This search is consumed by selfishness and greed. The individual who starts down the path to prosperity will eventually have nothing to come back to once the end is reached. That end: dissatisfied unhappiness and loneliness.

Good character was once a staple in the American System, yet now it has been devalued almost to the point of extinction. It is not easy to find good person in our society today. Selfish ambition, greed, covetousness, and jealousy have placed their marks on all but the strongest, and even the strongest are not unscathed by their evils. Wicked men oppress the upright, and always will.

Beliefs have become washed down. Tolerance is the catch phrase, but beneath the good of tolerance hides pluralism: the idea that everyone's beliefs are right. By this there are no longer absolutes. Good and evil are relative, as seen in the eye of each beholder. People of firm conviction are, ironically, not tolerated. This all brought about through a drive for unity, a drive which is rooted firmly in the desire for success. Prosperity cannot be achieved by any if all are engaged in disputes of belief.

Prosperity, therefore, is the root of many problems. Values have been cast aside, good character put to scorn, and firm conviction named intolerable.
