Everyone has been told, at some point in there lives, that they should earn a college degree and that this degree will help them earn more and live a better life. But what will it really do for you? Is the time away from family and the stress of study and testing really worth it?

In general, a lot of people have downplayed the value of a college education in modern times. In the past, an education seemed to make you something special. Being a student gave you a special place in the world and a status. Now, many people have adopted the idea that everyone can receive a degree and that the degrees are simply handed out. In actuality, that is not true.

College degrees are very valuable. When you originally enter the workforce you are just looking for a job to make you a few bucks, to buy that new car, and to pay the bills. But after a while, you realize that what you really are looking for is a career; something that you can work hard at and be satisfied. College, including universities, community colleges, and technical schools, are gateways to a better and more stable kind of lifestyle when you work hard at it.

Standing out From the Crowd

Did you know that some groups have tracked the college dropout rate at 600,000 students a year? That means, even though there are many people on campus, a great deal of them will not finish and receive their degree. If you are one of those who recognize the importance of what you are doing then you will stand out from the crowd.

Employers look for people who have put in the effort, the time, and gone through the work required. Chances are, the person reviewing your application or resume has also received a degree and know what you have invested into it.

Demonstrating Investment

Simply finishing a degree in a specific area shows a potential employer that you have an interest in that specialty. Most people look for those who have a genuine personal investment in the field. They want to know that you will be curious enough to ask questions and learn from actual experience. A college degree will demonstrate that you have the basic understanding, the interest, and the desire to continue learning.

Expanding Horizons

Though you may receive a degree in Education, for example, doesn't mean that you will be a teacher. You may want to look into administration, private tutoring, or other forms of child care. A college degree doesn't lock you into one career. Instead, it expands your possibilities.
