Well it all started for me when I was about ten years old. Me and my older brother were staying the summer with our aunt in South Carolina. My two cousins, brother, and I decided to go see a movie and they took me to see Cujo. How bad could it be a big fluffy dog gets a little miffed at those around him right. I still don't like Saint Bernard's!
Not only did the movie scare me but I was the youngest in the bunch so of course all the way home, in the dark and on deserted city streets, they teased me. Then a pack of dogs decided to put in an appearance! Yeah for me, I am happy to say I didn't wet my pants. I caught grief the whole time we stayed there because that movie scared me so bad.
You might think that is it, I went back home to Oklahoma and my brother to Texas and life went on. Well I had to walk about a half mile down the driveway to the bus stop and there was a gate I had to open and close. No big deal been walking that driveway for years and this was any other day.
I got all my stuff together and started down the driveway and started down the hill toward the gate and bus stop when I froze in my tracks. There was a pack of dogs at the gate and the biggest of the dogs was a Saint Bernard! I know at this point you're thinking what a coward but hey cujo did a pretty good job of killing nearly everyone in the movie and who was I but a ten year old kid.
I slowly started to walk backwards toward the house then turned and ran for the door. I got in and locked the door hoping that it was stronger than the doors in the movie. Then in my infinite wisdom I called my dad at work and told him I wasn't going to school, to which he responded why?
I shakily informed him that there was a Saint Bernard at the gate. His response was to tell me to go to the bus the dog wouldn't hurt me. I asked him in my most shocked voice if he'd seen the movie cujo, I told him the dog would kill me. He got a bit upset and informed me it was just a movie and to go to school.
After a few minutes of my futile pleading for my life he told me that the dog wouldn't kill me but he just might if I missed the bus. So with a stick and my trusty school books I started my journey to the bus stop again. This time when the gate came into sight there were no dogs in sight, which made me even more nervous, I was sure they were in the woods stalking me and I would soon be a tasty breakfast for cujo.
I got through the gate and ran full out to the bus stop and nervously watched all around me for the attack I knew was coming. Finally the bus rolled up and I threw the stick down and ran onto the bus and was safe. All that day I worried about when I got home cujo would be waiting for his afternoon snack in the form of me!
It was an uneventful sprint up the driveway and I stayed inside until my dad got home. He asked what I was doing and I told him I was staying safe from cujo. There I was in terror of the local killer dog and he was laughing at me! He called the neighbor and found out it was their dog and we went over and met the dog.
Didn't do much for me sure she was a nice dog then but one rabbit chase and one bite by a rabid bat and it's cujo dining on me and I just knew it! I have seen the movie a few time since then but I still get skittish when I see a saint Bernard. I was scared for life.
