Is there something illegal about tanning beds? Are they an inherent danger to our children? A tanning bed, like almost everything else, can be dangerous if used in an excessive or careless manner. Soda, guns, steak knives and lawn fertilizer can be just as bad but I don't hear anyone trying to stop minors from using them. As a matter of fact, I think I'd like my kids to use lawn fertilizer a little more often.

If laws are going to be enacted regarding tanning beds, there should be regulations governing the use of tanning beds in general. This could protect both minors and adults from over-tanning and potentially developing health issues from it. These regulations could also protect tanning salons from lawsuits stemming from tanning bed problems.

Personally owned tanning beds should be sold with signed documents stating that the owner understands and acknowledges the inherent dangers of tanning bed use. If there is a way for someone to abuse an item, like lawn fertilizer or a tanning bed, you can bet someone will do it. No matter how many laws are enacted to protect us from the world around us, you can't outlaw stupid. People will continue to do things that are illegal or foolish no matter what. Minors will abuse tanning beds just the same as adults will. We cannot punish all the people to protect the dumb ones.
