How the elderly can make greater contributions to their communities

The elderly possess a lifetime of knowledge within their minds. These are the true treasures of life. These are the secrets of life. These are true knowledge and wisdom.

The elderly today, lived through world wars, depression and famine. They lived through such wages as, one cent per day or two dollars for a gallon of fresh picked blueberries. They knew and know the value of hard labor. It is not just a phrase towards inmates in a prison - it was a very real fact of life - for everyone.

They have lived through the struggle to unionization, and no sugar or alcohol. They know the effects of war - both at home and, to the soldiers who fight them. They know what it takes to make a marriage work.

The elderly have laid out their lives to develop and refine the communities where we now live. They have toiled, sweat and bled - to leave us what we have - someplace to grow from and something to grow towards. What more can we ask of them?

How can the elderly make any greater contributions to their communities than what they have already given? They can share the wisdom of the years in schools, libraries, auditoriums and visits.

Only through our active participation, can the elderly contribute anything more to our communities. Asking their opinion and, hearing the answer.

The elderly, have given us our lives - that is their greatest contribution to our communities.
