If your house does not feel like your home then it is just a building where you put your "stuff." And now may be the time to consider a move. There is a clear understanding for most of us, on exactly what is the definition of home. It rarely matters , where it is, or how much it is worth or even the materials that were used in its building.
A home is where you find your comfort, your world where you are loved and understood. You never have to be perfect just you. If you are lucky you share your home with those that are close to you. This can be a family or maybe some friends.
The building that you call home, hopefully always protects you from the outside world. From the realities of environmental intrusions. But also from that which may intrude on your soul. The place that you can depart from each day and always want to return to at the end of each day.
In the best of all worlds, you do not have to make your home on the street, or in the shadow of camps that depends on the full generosity's of others. If you are able to work and provide for yourself, it is better. However , a place you can call home is in your heart with the people you want to be with. A space that you share in this world.
In many other parts of the world, a home can be a small thatched hut, with a pot on a fire on the outskirts of a field. What makes it home is the surrounding laughter of little children, and maybe a stray dog. That lingers in the periphery of the people . Strong men may be protecting this place and it does not matter what language they use to be understood. It is seen in their eyes, and in seeing a small child clinging to her mother. This is their home.
In addition to the blessing of having a home to go home to, is the reality, that home is the place and those people that always travel with you, forever in your heart. A home is not a building that houses us . It is more about the people in our lives and the love that we feel surrounds us . In the best of all worlds we welcome others into our home. The warmth from our homes extends into our neighborhoods and communities. It is a true blessing that we sometimes take for granted.
The wonderful thing about making your house into a home is that it is about you. You can make it your own and decorate with your style . Above all, give it a warmth that will linger with you when you are not at home. This is your space, use this as your opportunity to make it the place where your heart sings.
