Disciplining inspiration for creative writing

As the author of six erotica books now I can say that I have learned a great deal about disciplining my own writing and inspiring myself to keep writing. I'll share a few ways I have learned to control and channel my creative writing over the years.

First, write something every day. Whether it be via the process of revising something you previously worked on, continuing a project, or starting a new story, getting into the habit of writing is both rewarding and addictive. Once you get used to writing you will miss it when you don't write. Not only do you get yourself into the habit but you get those around you into the habit as well - my family knows better than to bother me during the mornings because that is my writing time.

Second, have something to write on with you at all times. Ideally I like my computer because I can edit easily and typing almost keeps up with the flow of ideas in my mind. However, since I only have a desktop I carry along a pad of paper with me at all times. Then if something inspires me I can write it down and not worry about forgetting it later.

Third, have multiple projects. I find that having more than one story I'm working on at any given time eases the ebbs and flows of my inspiration. Perhaps today the science fiction piece isn't drawing my attention but the horror story or the historical fiction does. Trying to force myself to work on only one project has never helped me even though I can understand how that might help others. If you find yourself staring a blank piece of paper or an empty screen, find another story to work with. I keep a list of ideas at the ready should I need them.

Fourth, reread what you last wrote. I find it very helpful to go back and read what I've all ready written. This helps remind me of my characters and their situation as well as the style I'm working with. Yes, you can edit it too as you reread but primarily I find it just helps my mind get refocused.

Finally, stop being so picky. Just write. Don't pull out your hair and grab and dictionary every time you struggle with a word. Get your ideas out now and then you can go back and work on revising things. If you can't think in actual paragraphs or scenes try just jotting down outlines and ideas. Stop censoring yourself though that the initial stage and just flow with the creative process inside you.

Through trial and error you can find what works best for you. Once you find that, I say don't change for anyone because only you can know where your muses are leading you.
