One of the hardest and most overlooked, and sometimes over diagnosed disabilities is what is commonly referred to as a "Learning Disability".
As the father of a teenager who is diagnosed with having learning disabilities. This is a topic that needs so much time and assessment before we are truly able to give a learning disorder diagnosis.
With the rapid growth of diagnosing children with a learning disorder. There should be many hours of analyzing the child's behavior not just at school, but within the homes as well.
As many will agree, we often think of childhood as a fun and carefree world. Yet, if we take a look at the reality of childhood, it can be also a frightening and scary time. The truth is, that so many children are witness to the problems the parents are dealing with they tend to act out in ways that some are so quick to diagnose the child as having a learning disability.
Each and every child that has become witness to some type of traumatic event within the home, will eventually seek attention in negative ways. It is unfortunate that many of these "attention seeking" behaviors are displayed in the classroom. Often leading to the child to be referred for assessment and then quickly diagnosed with a learning disability.
To properly diagnose any child with such a disability, I believe there should be so many more evaluations done. So many more interviews with the parents, teachers, peers, to seek out the root cause of these actions.
In assessing such disorders as learning disorders, there should be some interviews with parents to see if there has ever been any other close biological relatives who have had difficulties in the same areas. It is common to see that these learning disabilities are more common in boys than in girls.(Abnormal Psychology 3rd ed.)
Within the public school systems, it is difficult to watch and observe each and every child, each and every day. So it is imperative that we as parents also observe any type of behavior out of the ordinary for our children. We as parents need to spend the time to educate ourselves with the common signs of any disability before we allow some school doctor to recommend our child being placed in a special needs program. There is no one who can quickly pick up the abnormal signs our children display.
And parents please, do not think your child has a learning disorder or needs help when they are being 2 year old children. We need to allow our child to seek out their limits and boundaries on their own.
Be patient and if it is a major concern that your child may have a disability, do not settle on one perspective. After all, this is your future.
