I think most managers would agree that in order to create a win-win situation it is important that their employees both like and respect them and, in my experience, employees that like their manager are usually far more productive than those who don't. If an employee dislikes their manager they are less likely to go the extra mile and put in the extra hours when needed and it is almost certain that the atmosphere in the office is tense and stressful.
I have been both an employee and a manager over the last 25 years and during that time I have witnessed a variety of management styles. I have known several managers who have ruled their employees through fear and none of them were liked or respected. As a result these managers experienced a very high level of staff turnover which naturally affected the success of their team and at least two of these managers have had grievances filed against them for bullying and harassment.
The best example of management I ever witnessed was where a manager treated all her employees with respect, showed understanding during difficult times, supported her employees no matter what the situation, took an interest in developing her team to be the best that they could be and treated all her employees in a fair but firm manner. In turn her employees liked and respected her and thrived in the happy and relaxed atmosphere in the office. This manager never had a problem recruiting to her team and her employees were extremely productive and dedicated to their job. People that left the team did so because of promotion or a change in their own personal circumstances and expressed deep regret at having to leave such a great working environment.
Having modeled my own management style on the above example I can say without a shadow of doubt that it is important for your employees to like and respect you. Treat everyone as you would want to be treated and you will enjoy a long and successful career as a manager and be rewarded with knowing that you have a happy and productive team.
