I just went to a High school Football game tonight. These kids are living the dream. They still have a chance to play the game they love without all of lifes major problems staring them in the face. The lucky ones have parents in the crowd cheering them on, and would do anything to see their smiling little faces on ESPN.
ESPN is not doing this out of charity. These games will only be televised if there are rating to support it. I would rather see the High school Football games over say Pool Tournaments, PBA, Ice Dancing, Synchronized Swimming etc. etc.
The kids playing on the team are definitely not complaining about exploitation. For some this is the only time they will see themselves on ESPN. I would have loved nothing more than to have had on game televised. I would have recorded it and still to this day would be talking about how famous I was.
The schools are receiving money that will help the entire athletic department. Keep in mind Title IX exists in High school too. What about the marching bands that are invited to play in the Macy's Thanksgiving day parade? Would this be an appropriate response "We would hate to have the students play just to benefit a department Store"? Hogwash! What about the High school band the President invited to D.C. Should they have said "We are a liberal community and that would make the school a supporter of the Republican Party" Hell No!
If your child is given a chance to play, whatever he or she plays, as a parent you are going to be excited for the chance they are to be given. Whether it be sports, band, spelling bee. It doesn't matter, you want the see the fruit of your loins doing what they do, as much as they want to do what they do for the world to see.
Let the kids have there moment in the sun. For some life is going to get real tough, and if all they have from high school is that one time they were on ESPN, its still better than nothing.
