Traveling as a family can be a lot of fun. So many times we set our selves up for a bad experience by assuming how horrible our children will be on a plane. What you can do to keep your children happy while on the plane depends on their ages. If you have and infant or toddler the key is to have a bottle (or cup, depending on what they use) on hand at all times. Drinking during take off and landing will help their ears "pop" and keep them from experiencing any pain or discomfort from the change in altitude. For older children snacks and games can make the trip fun. Snacks meaning dry cereal in a bag or fruit, not sugar filled candies. There are many games to play while on the plane. One of our families favorites is the Alphabet game. To play this decide who will go first. That person needs to pick a category (such as, places, people, singing groups, fruit, etc.). Then they use the letter A to name one. For example, if the person picked fruit as the category then they could say Apple for the letter A. The next person then uses the letter B and could say Banana. Each person takes a turn until you make it all the way to Z. The great thing about this game is it can go on forever, making it a great game for long trips. Once you have made it to Z doing fruit, then you pick a different category and start from A again.
There is also the "I see something" game. To play this game you take turns seeking out something on the plane that you can describe to everyone else and they need to guess what you are describing. Make sure for this game you have a rule that everyone playing needs to be able to see the objects from their seats.
Remember also to let your children look out the windows during take off and landing. There are so many things to see and not too often do we get to see it from that point of view up there.
