Packing tips: What not to take on a tropical vacation

Leave your troubles behind and forget the alarm clock because you are headed for paradise. My favorite tropical delight is Sanibel/Captiva, Florida. It's a little slice of heaven nestled in the Gulf far from the madding crowd. Your trip will improve quite a bit if you pack the right things.

Choose light colors in clothing instead of dark due to the sun factor. You will be more comfortable in a white blouse instead of dark sun absorbing clothes. Florida natives can be seen wearing pastel shorts or Capri's with matching tops. Capri pants are great for keeping cool as opposed to full length slacks. I was happy wearing two different pairs of Capri pants for several days with a different top every day. It's easy to mix and match colors. Long sleeved shirts aren't comfortable for boat rides unless for skin protection. Do bring sunglasses, hats and sunscreen lotion.

Packing light will also ease your pain at the airport. You won't be needing heavy bluejeans or corduroy pants unless flying in from the North Pole. Don't bring flannel pajamas, rubber boots or five different handbags. Leave the beauty parlor at home. No need for hair coloring or extra toiletries. Do all those little extras before departure or when you get home.

True, you won't need much in the way of clothing in sunny Florida but you will need large, thick beach towels, not the small flimsy type. You can purchase towels at your local store which will save money or buy some at the beach shops in town. You will need at least three because of frequent use.

Choosing proper footwear is high on the list. You will be sorry and in pain if a pair of sandals is the extent of what's on your feet. Good walking tennis shoes are a must for the trip. Since I belong to the over fifty, fast approaching sixty category, I usually wear S.A.S. soft leather shoes which run $125 but will save your feet in the long run.

The most important thing to leave behind is your work. Sorry, no computers of any kind allowed. It will be hard but possible to live without your computer for a week. Since you packed so lightly plenty of room will be available for all those beautiful seashells and souvenirs. Remember to keep it simple as you blend in with the beauty and simplicity of your favorite tropical paradise.
